The Effects of Simply Recalled and Verbalized Major Life Events on Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate Reactivity in Chronic Primary Insomniac Patients

Abstract
Thirty-three chronic primary insomniac patients were studied regarding their physiological reactivity induced by simply recalled and verbalized 3 major life events of their own and other selected tasks. Blood pressure(BP), systolic and diastolic,
and
pulse rate(PR) were chosen chosen as autonomic variables and measured repeatedly with noninvasive BP monitor during the tasks. In comparison with seated resting baseline values, all 3 major life events recalled and verbalized induced significant
increases of systolic and diastolic BP and PR (p=0.000)
The magnitude of reactive increase of BPs(systolic and diastolic) was found to be more than the increase of BPs in the presence of physicians ('white coat hypertension'), defined as the first BPs measured during the adjustment period(p<0.006),
and
to be
comparable to the amount induced by standardized tasks in other studies such as cold pressor test and mental arithmetic test. The same was true of PR
The findings seem to support the 'physiological hyperarousal' and the 'cognitive intrusions' hypotheses of chronic primary insomnia.
